HARRISBURG — The director of the new state Office of Open Records is criticizing parts of the law that created her department.
Terry Mutchler, a former Associated Press reporter overseeing the office that will handle appeals under the Right to Know Law, said she does not support sections of the law that set lower standards of openness for the Legislature than for other government agencies.

HARRISBURG — A member of the state’s casino oversight board fired back at senators who want to eliminate outside income of board members, saying lawmakers should play by the same rules.
“I’m an old believer in what’s good for one is good for all,” said Jeffrey Coy, a former House member from Shippensburg earning $145,000 a year on the Gaming Control Board.

HARRISBURG — Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll waited at least a month to tell the public she has a rare form of cancer, staffers and the governor’s office said Thursday.
Knoll, 77, who is undergoing chemotherapy, notified Gov. Ed Rendell in mid-July that she was sick and being treated but only told the governor Saturday that she was suffering from neuroendocrine cancer, her Chief of Staff Sal Sirabella said.

HARRISBURG — A controversial environmental advocate was nominated Tuesday to become head of the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Gov. Ed Rendell nominated John Hanger, CEO of Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future, known as PennFuture, to replace Kathleen McGinty as DEP secretary. McGinty resigned in July, saying she wanted more time to spend with her family.

HARRISBURG — A Democrat who supported legalized slot machines and a Republican who opposed them announced a joint plan Tuesday to tighten rules on casino oversight.
The bill “would create greater public confidence in Pennsylvania’s gaming act and Gaming Control Board,” said state Sen. Jane Orie, R-McCandless, the majority whip. “That confidence has been shaken recently, and we must restore the complete integrity of the process in the public eye.”
